Frode.ai: Personalized, Intelligent AI-Powered Assistance

Frode.ai is a Norwegian health tech startup founded by a diverse team of AI architects, professors, psychologists, and seasoned entrepreneurs. The driving force behind the company is a strong belief that artificial intelligence can make a profound difference in the realm of mental health. The company is named after one of its founders, Frode Thuen, a leading Norwegian clinical therapist and researcher. 

 

Unique Requirements for Product Development

To realize their vision of accessible mental health support, Frode.ai is developing a safe and empathetic AI-based conversational partner. Their AI technology integrates cutting-edge innovation with a deep understanding of human emotions, ensuring users are treated with care, understanding, and privacy. Frode.ai offers a personalized experience by adapting to various communication styles, preferences, and emotional states. Their inclusive platform understands diverse cultural, racial, and gender identities — as well as multiple languages — to create a supportive environment. Additionally, it can recognize various emotional cues and respond in an appropriate and compassionate manner.

As they were developing their product, Frode.ai knew that they could not rely on a generalist chatbot to power their conversational platform; they needed to build a custom AI specializing in emotional wellbeing. Their advanced system combines multiple AI models, event-driven processes, and a system architecture inspired by how the human mind works. Given the sensitive nature of their product, Frode.ai prioritizes the security and privacy of user data. All interactions are confidential and protected and all data is encrypted using industry-leading security protocols, providing users with peace of mind.

 

Challenges with Existing Deployments

Initially, Frode.ai utilized a dedicated endpoint for running AI inference. However, after attempting to deploy the system, they found the costs to be prohibitively high and began to explore pay-per-token options. During this process, they tested several different inference providers, to be sure they would not encounter challenges with rate limits. Several of the providers they evaluated used questionable optimization practices behind the scenes, which ultimately affected the quality of their outputs and did not meet Frode.ai’s expectations for transparency.

Another requirement was that their inference deployments be hosted within the EU, to ensure full compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) act. Frode.ai considered using an Azure serverless endpoint hosted in Sweden, but this option had excessive latency and lacked other necessary features to meet their requirements. While searching for alternative solutions, Frode.ai found an ideal partner in fellow start-up CentML.

 

Finding a Solution that Scales

Frode.ai began its collaboration with CentML in November 2024. They worked closely with CentML to establish a dedicated endpoint that better suited their needs. CentML’s flexible platform lets Frode.ai experiment with multiple models (including Llama and DeepSeek v3) to determine the best support for multiple languages including Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and Ukrainian. Tweaking deployment settings or switching between models only requires one click to change the parameter in the API call.
